Canticum Canticorum

The Song of Songs set to music in the renaissance and early baroque

The small collection of poems from the Old Testament depicts lustful and sensuous love, with themes after the early oriental fashion of the visual arts, using poetical and highly imaginative words. The Songs of Solomon inspired countless composers, whose expressive harmonies depict the emotions in this famous bible text.
In this programme the Song of Songs has been set to music for soprano and instruments, framed by instrumental arrangements of vocal Song of Songs and by sonatas and canzonas from the prints of early baroque masters such as:

C. Monteverdi, P. G. Cima, A. Cima, G. Bassano, T. Merula
